Lexington, Kentucky, USA – June 18, 2021 – The second week of the Lexington Split Rock Hunter Jumper Classic kicked off Tuesday, June 16, continuing to offer its expanded schedule with hunter, jumper and equitation competition. Featuring a CSI 3* rating, international show jumping competition was highlighted Friday with the $50,000 1.50m Welcome CSI 3* where nearly 70 combinations tried their hand at Oscar Soberon’s track, but it was Kristen VanderVeen (USA) and Bull Run’s Prince of Peace (Cardenio 2 x Contender) who emerged victorious.
The 1.50m course consisted of 16 jumping efforts, challenging competitors with a vertical-vertical combination and the narrow Split Rock wall to a large liverpool oxer. Rails were dropped in various places across the track with just three competitors finishing clear in the first round to secure their spot on the podium.
Ultimately VanderVeen and the 12-year-old Holsteiner gelding, owned by Bull Run Jumpers Six LLC, would produce the best jump-off effort to take the top spot.
Spencer Brittan (USA) and Uncle Blue (Chacco-Blue x Robin Z) were faster than the eventual but their jump-off time of 37.280 seconds came at the expense on two rails down for a total of 8 penalty-points, still good enough for a second-finish.
Alex Granato (USA) and The Bright Lights Group’s Carlchen W (Chacco-Blue x Continue) were the only other combination that had qualified for the tiebreaker, ending up in third place after opting to retire in the decisive phase.
FEI competition will continue into Saturday with the $37,000 1.45m Power & Speed CSI3* and will culminate with the $100,000 1.50m Grand Prix CSI3* on Sunday, June 20. Hunter riders will be recognized in the Rolex Stadium on Saturday, June 19 with the $20,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby set to begin at 6 p.m.
