Karl Cook & Caracole de La Roque are the Conquerors of the $650,000 American Gold Cup CSI 5*

Traverse City, Michigan, USA โ€“ September 17, 2023 โ€“ The 2023ย Traverse City Horse Showsย season came to a close asย Karl Cookย (USA) found his golden girl on Sunday. He andย Caracole de la Roqueย stole the show in theย $650,000 American Gold Cup CSI 5*ย , presented byย Great Lakes Sports Commission, during the conclusion ofย Major League Show Jumpingโ€™s fifth leg atย Flintfields Horse Park.ย

โ€œItโ€™s amazing,โ€ said Cook after winning one of the United Statesโ€™ most prized trophies. โ€œItโ€™s amazing to be alongside these unbelievable riders who Iโ€™ve looked up to for years. If youโ€™re a rider who cares about the sport, the American Gold Cup is one you want to win. Iโ€™m so proud of my team and my horse, and Iโ€™m so happy to be amongst these great riders.โ€

Alan Wadeย (IRL) set a 1.60m course fit for the day and seven of the worldโ€™s top 20-ranked riders. Cook and Signe Otsbyโ€™s mareย Caracole de la Roqueย jumped at the midway point, and they ultimately made up one of eight clear rounds. Coming in for the jump-off, they left nothing to chance, with Cook trusting the mareโ€™s unbelievable foot speed to make the field chase him.

โ€œThis is the fastest horse Iโ€™ve ever sat on,โ€ Cook said of theย 11-year-old Selle Franรงais mareย (Zandor Z x Kannan), a mare heโ€™s still undefeated with in jump-off action . โ€œIโ€™ve had a lot of fast horses throughout my career, but this horse feels most comfortable at speeds that horses are not normally comfortable at. Itโ€™s not anything Iโ€™m doing, itโ€™s all her.

โ€œMy plan was to do six [strides from fences] one to two; that worked out well,โ€ he recalled. โ€œBut when we walked the jump-off, 12 โ€˜Bโ€™ to 16 was a forward seven [strides], and off a tight turn to the combination, youโ€™re bound to land shallow. The idea is you land and go to get seven. I did that, but what I didnโ€™t realize is I actually did six instead of seven. That wasnโ€™t the plan but Iโ€™m happy Iโ€™m sitting here.โ€

Prior to Cookโ€™s round,ย Ashlee Bondย (ISR) led the way withย Donatello 141ย with a time of 34.35 seconds, which appeared a tough task to beat. Two rounds later, Cook shaved the time to 32.95 seconds. Bond ultimately ended up second.

In third was another rider on hot form, but with a horse he didnโ€™t expect to see on a podium of this caliber just yet.ย Daniel Coyleย (IRL) pilotedย Quintin, owned by Ariel Grange, to another fast double-clear, knowing third place was likely the best possible outcome for him on the given day.

Matt Morrissey, as well as the entire team behind Traverse City Horse Shows, was thrilled with the turnout for the final week of the Tournament of Champions, as well as the entire 13 weeks of horse showing in Northern Michigan for 2023.ย

Podium: 2)ย Ashlee Bondย (ISR) 1)ย Karl Cookย (USA) 3)ย Daniel Coyleย (IRL)

โ€œThis week is the ending of our 13-week summer series,โ€ Morrissey commented. โ€œItโ€™s been a long, great summer here. We brought the American Gold Cup from New York to Traverse City in the middle of 2020 during a pandemic. We werenโ€™t quite sure but with [the Great Lakes Sports Commissionโ€™s] help we found a permanent home for the American Gold Cup and itโ€™s now been a five-star the past few years for the first time ever.โ€
