Wellington, Florida, USA – March 28, 2022 – Margie Engle (USA) secured the Martha W. Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award on Sunday, March 27, during week 11 of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, FL.
Hometown favorite Engle of Wellington, FL, accumulated the highest number of points among all female athletes competing in the $50,000 Adequan® WEF Challenge Cup Round 11 on Friday, March 25, and the $216,000 CSI4* Palm Beach County Sports Commission Grand Prix held on Sunday, March 27. Engle and her mount, Dicas, finished in fifth place in Thursday’s class and had one fence down for a top 10 placing in Sunday’s Grand Prix in the International Arena.
“It feels great to win this award,” said Engle, 63, who represented the U.S. at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. “It shows that the horses have been really consistent all week. I want to thank Martha for always sponsoring this award. It is so nice to have an award that recognizes the female riders.
“I’ve had Dicas since he was six years old,” continued Engle of the 13-year-old Rheinlander gelding (Diarado x Cassini I) owned by Storm Ridge Capital LLC; Show Horses, Inc.; and Garber and Gladewinds, Inc. “He has been a really consistent partner. He is like a big puppy dog. He is a big horse but acts like a small horse. Everyone thinks I make him look big, but he is over 18 hands, and he is all legs and not a lot of body. He always wants to cuddle with you and put his head in your lap. He loves his job, and he always goes in the ring and tries. He is all heart.”
In recognition of winning the Leading Lady Rider Award, Jolicoeur, accompanied by her husband, Dr. Stephen Norton, and her daughter, Isabel Jolicoeur, presented Engle with a bottle of champagne, a bouquet of flowers, and a gift certificate for a shopping spree at Hunt, Ltd.
A long-time sponsor and dedicated supporter of horse sport at WEF for many years, 2022 marks Jolicoeur’s 12th season presenting the Leading Lady Rider Award. A former competitor herself, Jolicoeur enjoyed a successful international show jumping career before becoming Florida’s number one Douglas Elliman real estate broker.
Throughout WEF, the Martha W. Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award, given in memory of fellow realtor and horsewoman Dale Lawler, is presented each week to the female athlete who earns the most points in the weekly WEF Challenge Cup Series and grand prix events. During the final week of WEF, the Martha W. Jolicoeur Overall Leading Lady Rider Award will be presented to the female rider who accumulates the most points throughout the 13-week circuit.
