Two Places on the Throne! Kyle King Bookends the Podium of the $87,500 Jayman Built Cup CSI 5*

Calgary, Canada – July 03, 2025 – Thursday’s $87,500 Jayman Built Cup CSI 5* had 40 competitors step through the Clock Tower to challenge FEI Course Designer Santiago Varela (ESP) 560m track. As the lone qualifier for the weekend’s $1,000,000 ATCO Queen Elizabeth II Cup, athletes hoping to compete for the grand purse need to complete Thursday’s course with at least one horse.

Nine athletes advanced to the jump off but today’s victory belonged to Kyle King of the United States. King has been competing at Spruce Meadows since he was 16 years-old and now brings not only a strong string of horses for himself, but a  keen group of students hoping to build their own Spruce Meadows story.

In the end, the American prevailed with Kayenne Z in the tiebreaker, registering the fastest time of 40.39 seconds. King wasn’t done, he was even faster on Odysseus, but their time of 39.56 seconds came at the expense of a pole down and four penalty-points, still good enough for bronze honors.

Winner of the $500,000 AON Grand Prix CSI 5* with Daniel last Sunday, Matthew Sampson came to clinching another major win, this time finishing second on Ebolensky, only three-hundredths of a second behind the eventual winners.

“Horses grow here. And, you know, the first class I did with her (Kayenne Z) I thought I was going to be all cool to that first little jump, and we had a miscommunication. She stopped. I almost fell off. It was actually blessing in disguise. That was the only bobble she’s had all season, but it taught me and made me realize I need to put my leg on out there in that ring (International Ring)” – Kyle King (USA) on how Kayenne Z and his relationship has grown over the Spruce Meadows Summer Tournaments.
